One such woman is Katherine Johnson, an African-American mathematician whose calculations were instrumental in the success of NASA’s Apollo missions. Yet, for many years, her story remained untold, hidden in the shadows of history.

The Struggles as a Black Trailblazer

Johnson’s journey was not an easy one. Born in 1918 in West Virginia, she was a prodigy, graduating from high school at 14 and college at 18. Despite her exceptional talent, she faced numerous obstacles due to her race and gender. She was initially denied jobs and educational opportunities, and even when she started working at NASA, she had to fight for recognition and equal treatment.

The Triumphs of overcoming obstacles

Despite these challenges, Johnson persevered. She was one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist. Her calculations were crucial in the success of the first manned spaceflight by an American, Alan Shepard, and the first human journey to the Moon. In 2015, at the age of 97, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

Johnson’s contributions to space exploration are immeasurable. She helped break the glass ceiling for women and minorities in STEM, proving that talent knows no gender or race. Her story, along with those of her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, was finally brought to light in the 2016 film “Hidden Figures.”
